Glossary and Terms
- Micro-site
- Also called a minisite, a microsite is a separate page of a Web site that has a separate URL than its home page and is used to provide information about and/or promote something that is related to the home page.
- Domain name
- The unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots. Example: www.mediascape.org.uk.
- Hosting
- Once your website is completed the site must be placed on a web "Server" (a computer which is permanently connected to the Internet). This means that your site can be accessed anywhere around the world at any time.
- Page or Web-page
- Scrollable hypertext documents with HTML formatting codes that you see on the Web.
- E-commerce
- Electronic commerce, also e-business, a term for all kinds of business that are established electronically especially over the Internet.
- Database
- A collection of information organized and presented to serve a specific purpose. A computerized database is an updated, organized file of machine readable information that is rapidly searched and retrieved by computer.
- Hyper Link
- A hyper link connects one document or place on a document to another document, another place on the same document, or to another file. Hyper links in text are easy to spot because they are usually underlined and a different color from the rest of the text.
- Fluid, flexible and fixed layouts
- A fluid web page layout is when a page contracts and expands horizontally inside a persons web browser despite the size of the browser window or the resolution of the monitor. A fixed layout will remain the same width no matter what size of the browser window.
- Website
- A collection of webpages linked together on a single topic or for a single business accessible from the world wide web.
- Web Browser
- Software that gives a user access to the World Wide Web. Web browsers often provide a graphical interface that lets users click buttons, icons, and menu options to view and navigate Web pages. Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer are popular Web browsers.
- Assistive technology
- Assistive technology refers to any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off-the shelf, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
